The form of Latin S arises from Greek Σ by dropping a person out in the 4 strokes of that letter. The (angular) S-shape composed of 3 strokes existed to be a variant on the 4-stroke letter Σ already while in the epigraphy of Western Greek alphabets, and also the 3 and 4 strokes variants
